Join us for the 6/25 Unity March

The recent rise in hate-driven attacks affect the lives and well-being of not only Asian Americans, but also Black, Latino, LGBTQ, and other marginalized communities. And the birth of the Stop Asian Hate movement has activated a collective Asian American voice demanding an end to the threats against our personal sense of safety and wellness. That is why over 60 major Asian American serving organizations have come together to organize a historic event to rally our communities and demand action. We invite you to join the Unity March on the National Mall in Washington DC from 12 - 3 pm to demand full inclusion in our democracy, justice, and representation.

AAPI HERITAGE MONTH RECAP

2022 DC Dragon Boat Race

Ascend GW's Executive VP of External Affairs, Tina Cooper, and Team Legacy finished with a Bronze in the Open Division A - Major Finals in both the 200m and 500m races for the 2022 DC Dragon Boat Races! Team Legacy has consistently placed in the top three for these races for the last few years.

The team name, Legacy, is derived from "Qu-Yuan’s Legacy", the Chinese poet whose story inspired The Dragon Boat Festival and the rice dumpling custom. In 278 BCE, Qu-Yuan drowned himself to express his anguish over the devastation suffered by his state, Chu, at the hands of the neighboring state, Qin. Local villagers rushed out in boats to rescue him, but were unsuccessful. The villagers tossed rice, wrapped in bamboo leaves, into the river as offerings to the spirit of Qu-Yuan and to feed the river fish to prevent them from devouring his body. The racing of the boats to save Qu-Yuan, combined with the beating of drums to scare away the fish, intertwined with the rice offering, turned into a Chinese and Asian tradition of making zongzi rice dumplings and Dragon Boat races in May/June. Check out more photos of the Dragon Boat Race in the photo gallery on the Ascend GW website.
